LIBERIA SOCIETY OF CRITICAL CARE NURSES

Battered by years of civil war and then in 2014-16 by the worst Ebola epidemic in history, Liberia's health sector is on its knees. The crumbling infrastructure lacks almost everything -- medicine, beds, equipment, ambulances, even a reliable electricity supply. The Liberia Society of Critical Care Nurses (LSCCN) started in 2018 as a small group comprising five nurses. Its office is located in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia under the umbrella of the Liberian Nurses Association (LNA).

On May 8, 2019, the society was launched with more than one hundred registered nurses from private and public hospitals, clinics, as well as nurses working in non-governmental organizations. Also in attendance were student nurses from training institutions. The occasion was graced by stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, Jhpiego, World Federation of Critical Care Nurses, MedReach and other institutions.

On May 27, 2019, the constitution of the society was validated by nurses from major hospitals. We developed membership form for members and we have approximately 150 members from major hospitals in Liberia. We have planned to carry out massive membership drive in order to recruit more members.

The society has been following the MedReach Webinars and connecting nurses to the online classes. We plan to also conduct teaching sessions from these webinars for nurses that are in direct care.

At the moment, the association follows the norm and standards of the AFCCN as inscribed in the constitution under the holistic umbrella of WFCCN to foster our operations. The society has applied for full membership with the African Federation of Critical Care Nurses and the World Federation of Critical Care Nurses. The society can boost of being member of the AFCCN and pending WFCCN.
